Good Science Fair Project Ideas - Where Do They Come From?

The very idea of conducting a science fair is to help the students learn scientific facts in an interesting way, to understand it and also exhibit what they had learnt, to an audience. To achieve this, the theme of the project must be within the realm of the students and has to be chosen carefully. In order to have a successful project, one must first find a good science fair project idea.

Good school libraries and well equipped public libraries should be a helpful source for good science fair project ideas. But now plenty are available over the Internet. One can get a good science fair project idea from the ones listed, according to the targeted age group. In the science category, choose a topic that interests most of the students. Then, narrow it down and make it into a project. It would be ideal if it can be of some use to the general public also. In general, use the internet sparingly, unless there is a paid guide. Keep in mind that all of the ideas and information you find for free on the internet are about projects that have been done before by thousands of other students, while in general, paid guides are performed by far fewer students because of the price tag barrier.

A good science fair project idea can be chosen from natural science, physical science, microbiology or any interesting branch of science. Be considerate that the necessary articles required for the project are freely available either naturally or in the nearby areas. Let not the collection of materials be a big chore for the eager students that the project becomes a hard task.

Safety should be high on the list such that the students understand the risks involved and the project is undertaken in such a way that it is monitored and supervised both in the school and if it is carried on at home, by some elder.

It would be ideal if the project be done and over within a few minutes time, such that it can be demonstrated in full to the judges and the audience, who attend the fair. Time consuming projects can make the tiny minds restless.

Bigger projects that need checking and validation may be reserved for the students of the higher grades. Simple projects should be easily reproducible. Little projects that have a public value may be highly appreciated, and should definitely be considered good science fair project ideas if they have wide application. Few natural cycles that take a few days to complete may be carefully conducted such that the audiences may be asked to revisit the fair, which may be a crowd puller project.

Explanation of simple magical tricks and attempts to demystifying existing myths may be quiet receptive to the young minds. For zoology projects, information is gathered by observation. For physics and chemistry projects, experiments are done, data is collected and the conclusions are made. Such should be the good science fair project ideas.

Good science fair project ideas and the projects should keep the young minds motivated.

Mink - The Unexpected Endangered Species

When I think of mink, I certainly didnt think they were endangeredIn fact, they are one of the most endangered mammals in the world. The terrible thing is that the 1st thing that comes to my mind is a mink coat. How sad. I dont even think of them living in the wild

They are semi-aquatic and are carnivores.

Scientific Classification:

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Carnivora

Family: Mustelidae

Genus: Mustela

There are 4 species of mink: Mustela vison, Mustela vison evergladensis, Mustela lutreola, Mustela macrodon.

Mink are in the same family as otters and polecats.

Its true, the mink has been highly prized for its fur, and this lead the way to large-scale mink farming. This is the precise reason that the animal welfare activists have been vocal and adamant about standing up for the mink. Preferring a habitat of forest brooks, the American mink is well suited to its homeland range. However, the Everglade mink, a subspecies, is very endangered. The Great Lakes mink has had a widespread decline, primarily thought to be due to pollution of PCBs and dioxins.

Mink have an extremely high mortality rate. Mink that survive the 1st yr of life in the wild can live as long as 3 yrs. In contrast, mink in captivity have been known to live between 10-12 yrs. Thats a huge difference. The other problem is that, in captivity anyway, they will have 4-5 kits per litter and thats only once/yr. Unfortunately, this number would be dramatically reduced when it comes to breeding in the wild.

What Can You Do To Help?

1. Help stand up for the mink by not purchasing or wearing mink fur coats.

2. Donate to local and worldwide animal welfare groups.

Live exotically!

Anaconda Snakes Myth - Everything Revealed

Anaconda snakes extract similar responses from most of us, a response smeared by hatred, fear and probably revulsion. The image of this serpent that we carry in our mind is that of a creature that looks vile and is widely known to be monstrous.

Apart from a few of the wealthy and the adventurous ones who want them as pets, most of us prefer to see anaconda snakes in TV and glossy travel magazines rather than in our homes and at the patio.

The natural habitat if these reptiles are the dense tropical forests in lovely South America. Found extensively in the Amazon River basin and also other tropical forests, this serpentine creature is worlds one of the largest snakes.

These snakes are carnivores, and prey a range of aquatic as well as land based creatures. While fish, turtles, frogs, dogs, sheep and deer are its favorite preys, anaconda snakes are also know to have constricted and swallowed considerably bigger animals like fully grown deer and even jaguars.

Most of us city dwellers harbor perceptual pollution and think that anaconda snakes are habituated man-eaters. In reality, it is exactly the opposite. If given a chance, these snakes will retreat when confronted, and will attack only as the last desperate act of defense. Anacondas are known to attach humans only when cornered, attacked, harmed or startled.

All anaconda snakes are perceived to be gigantic having length in excess of fifty feet and weighing more than two hundred kilograms each. Again, reality has been totally distorted by these myths.

The biggest of these snakes grow up to thirty-five feet, and do not generally cross one hundred and fifty kilos when weighed. When bred in captivity, they tend to grow to smaller sizes- think about that for a moment!

Another interesting fact is the physical superiority of females over males. As a matter of fact, female anacondas have known to grow as much as five times longer and heavier than its male counterparts. This is probably one of the extreme cases on physical disparity between two sexes of the same species.

Another interesting aspect of these majestic snakes is the way they swallow their preys. These constrictors have powerful jaws that are loosely hinged to the skulls.

While swallowing their preys, the jaws are unhinged, and as a result they can swallow considerably bigger preys. The preys are always swallowed from their head side to ensure that sharp edges like feathers do not rupture the delicate internal membrane of the snakes digestive system.

Docile creatures they are, such reptiles have been wrongly portrayed as the big, bad guys in novels as well as movies. Despite their projected bad guy image, this reptiles have been one of the most favored pet creatures for the wealthy and the adventurous people.

Be it the vast natural expanses of the Amazon or the glass cage in the zoo, they will inspire the imagination of people. Long live the king of the Amazon, the anaconda snakes.

Anaconda Snakes are scientifically studied predators being monitored today. You can freely learn more about the newest topics, videos and educational in-depth facts by visiting http://www.anacondasnakes.org

Vernal Equinox History and Traditions

From a technical standpoint the Vernal Equinox is an astronomical event, its one of the four quadrature days of the Earths orbit. However for people both modern and ancient, the Vernal Equinox marked the transition from winter into spring. The Vernal Equinox occurs on March 20th or 21st and is one of two days during the year when there are 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness, the other day is the Autumnal Equinox.

People have been marking and celebrating the Vernal Equinox for thousands of years. The Great Sphinx which was constructed over 4500 years ago on the Giza Plateau in Egypt, faces due east on the Vernal Equinox. The monoliths located at Stonehenge, which are estimated to be over 3000 years old, mark the position of the rising sun on the Vernal Equinox. In Central America the Ancient Mayan Caracol Tower and Temples of the Sun and Moon also have alignments that coincide with the suns position on the Vernal Equinox.

Most historians believe that this knowledge was important to ancient cultures in choosing a time to plant their crops. In Iran they celebrate Norouz (which roughly translates to new day) on the Vernal Equinox. In China they celebrate Chunfen on the Vernal Equinox. In ancient Europe they celebrated the arrival of the goddess of spring Ostara on this day. Ostara was also known as Ostera and Eostre in different parts of Europe. Many historians believe the Christian holiday Easter gets its name from Eostre, as she had an enchanted rabbit that could lay eggs. In more modern times the Vernal Equinox marked the first Earth Day celebration in 1971.

One of the odd traditions that that occur on the Vernal Equinox is egg balancing. The story goes that it is possible to balance a raw egg on its oblong end on this day. There is no truth to this rumor its just as easy (or hard) to balance an egg on its end on this day as it is any other day. This story is perpetuated by the media who usually run a small segment on it, during news shows on this day.
